GENESIS

My friends and I saw the first performance
by GENESIS in San Francisco at
Bill Graham's Winterland on 3/24/74.
We met Peter Gabriel before the concert when he stopped
by for a sound check. He was very nice and gave
us his autograph. After the concert, he dove
into a waiting car to avoid the fans.
Mike Rutherford, Steve Hackett and Tony Banks
were very accessible and gave us their
autographs after the concert, while Phil Collins
avoided the fans, too.  Below are articles and
LPs I have saved. To see my photos and
read our memoirs of that concert, go to -
GENESIS performed SELLING ENGLAND
BY THE POUND at this concert.
It had just been released.
This is the 45 single "I Know What I
Like (In Your Wardrobe).
This B side was not on the album.
An early article about Genesis after
their first trip to the USA.
They did not come out here to the
West Coast, but made a big splash in NY.

A review of the band after the
release of FOXTROT.

This article appeared shortly before
they toured the USA again.
My friends and I saw them just
two months later at Winterland.

These reviews of Genesis showed
how they were gaining momentum.
The review of SELLING ENGLAND
BY THE POUND was short sighted
and a good reason why I rarely take
reviews seriously

This interview with Peter Gabriel
appeared in December 1974, after their USA tour.
He achieved his goal.

The front and back cover
of their first album.
The original American album cover
and inside of Trespass.

The original American LP cover
and inside cover of Nursery Cryme.

The original American LP cover
and inside cover of Foxtrot.
Like their music, their LP covers
were beautiful works of art.
These were by Paul Whitehead,
who did work on other LPs like
Van Der Graaf Generator.

They took on a different look for the
album cover of Selling England By
The Pound. This is the LP cover and
original insert. The painting is
by Betty Swanwick, but always
reminded me of Gahan Wilson's
bizarre cartoon art.

FLAMING YOUTH was a band
Phil Collins was in before GENESIS.

Peter Gabriel and Tony Banks had first been in
GARDEN WALL, while Mike Rutherford and
Tony Phillips were in a band called ANON.
Phillips left GENESIS later and Steve Hackett joined.
Peter also played flute on Cat Stevens'
MONA BONE JAKON.
